How can I find the approach and departure angles in my simulated crash?

There are a couple of ways of getting this information out of our simulation. We’ll work on obtaining these values for the simulation shown here:

METHOD 1 | VC5, VC4, and VC3 USERS | Use Line Tool

First, you can simply use the line tool to sample the approach and departure angles directly by using the vehicle trajectory lines. Here we see our vehicles which were frozen so that we can see the CG trajectory lines and so that can draw line objects without accidentally selecting the vehicles.

Using the line tool, we simple draw a line object over our vehicle’s CG trajectory line for the pre-impact portion of the event. The approach angle is indicated by the line object’s yaw value.

We do the same for the post-impact portion of the trajectory. The departure angle is given by the yaw angle of the second line.

The same method is used for the red vehicle.

 

METHOD 2 | VC5 and VC4 USERS | use On-Screen Dynamics Info

As of the Summer 2020 Software Update, you can now display vni in the On-screen Dynamics Info box. Simply move the time-slider to the moment of interest and read off the vni value. Be sure to enable “use global space” so that vni is relative to the global x-axis.


 

METHOD 3 | VC5 and VC4 USERS | use Dynamics Info

As of the Summer 2020 Software Update, you can now display vni in the Dynamics Info box. Here we set up two Dynamics Info boxes for each vehicle. The first is the moment before impact and the second is after the collision ends. Be sure to enable “use global space” so that vni is relative to the global x-axis.

 

METHOD 4 | VC5, VC4, and VC3 USERS | Use Dynamics Report

The approach and departure angles can also simply be read off the dynamics report. Be sure to enable “use global space” so that vni is with respect to the global x-axis.
